ABOUT LA MAMA

Proceeds from the benefit will greatly assist La MaMa in producing the 10th La MaMa Moves! dance festival this May 21 – June 21, 2015. The festival has showcased the work of approximately 400 emerging and seasoned choreographers since its beginnings. A full-range of contemporary dance forms and genres are presented including post-modern, experimental, hip-hop, house, ethnic-fusion, burlesque, swing dance, aerial, and hula. Miki Orihara, Yoshiko Chuma, Ashley Chen, Dylan Crossman, Jane Comfort, Maura Donohue, Lance Gries, Meredith Monk, Wendy Osserman, Jen Abrams, Sara Rudner, Jodi Melnick, Jennifer Monson, Ping Chong, Vicky Shick, Jon Kinzel, and Muna Tseng are just a few of the artists who have been featured in La MaMa Moves!.

La MaMa remains committed to supporting people who make art. Founded by theatre pioneer Ellen Stewart in 1961, La MaMa is recognized as the seedbed of new work by artists of all nations and cultures. To date, La MaMa has presented more than 150,000 artists from over 70 nations. La MaMa has become a world-renowned cultural institution that is home to three theaters, an art gallery, rehearsal studios, a visiting artist dormitory, office spaces, and an extensive archive documenting the history of Off-Off Broadway.  Each season, we offer more than 70 productions and reach more than 32,000 people of all ages and backgrounds.

Dance Festival continues to support La MaMa’s commitment to presenting diverse performance styles that challenge audience’s perception of dance by featuring performance/installations, experimental film screenings & public symposiums which address dance artists’ engagement with the current political climate, as well as honoring diasporic histories and legacy, ancestral inspirations and inter-generational dialogue.
