POSTPONED: La Mama Umbria Reading Series 2020

The playwrights of the 2019 La MaMa Umbria Playwright Retreat

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM LA MAMA

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, all public events and performances of shows at La MaMa are suspended as of Friday, March 13, 2020 until further notice. Ticket buyers will be contacted as soon as possible with more information.

La MaMa and CultureHub have closed this weekend’s interactive exhibition, Re-Fest, to the public and instead the event will be live-streamed all weekend. La MaMa will be providing online streaming of other select productions and events, and more details will be available shortly.

The playwrights of the 2019 La MaMa Umbria Playwright Retreat will present fourteen new plays in thirteen staged readings. The 2019 retreat was led by master playwright Lisa Kron, two-time Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist, with the theme of the Biblical story of Exodus. Schedule of readings is listed below:

Friday, March 13th

4:15 PM -- "Dead Reckoning" by Lezlie Wade

Summary:

When 12 year old Betty Klenk sees the portrait of Amelia Earhart on the cover of the 1933 February edition of Town & Country magazine, she is forever changed. Told in the vein of a song cycle, Dead Reckoning follows a hero’s obsession with flying and a young girl’s obsession with her hero until the startling moments of Amelia’s final flight.

Summary:

She is pursued by her mother Mary who desperately hopes to find a reconciliation between the two siblings.

Summary:

Hee-Seok has been living in New York fo 6 years. He had an odd dream where he was a butterfly following a Boy’s journey in a magical desert. It was when the Boy lost his only family, and when he wandered in endless desert trying to find himself. He encountered a pyramid, a half-bird man, and a girl with her sheep. While it is not sure if it was a dream or not, it tells a mythical story about “self”.
