From the Archives: Coyote: Sam Shepard

by Kylie Goetz

At the La MaMa Archive, we love working with writers, researchers and scholars as they study the history of Off-Off Broadway theatre. We get even more excited when they go on to share those narratives with the wider public. And we, frankly, are delighted when they take a moment to recognize La MaMa Archive in their Acknowledgements!

So we were overjoyed to receive an advance copy from Simon & Schuster of Coyote: The Dramatic Lives of Sam Shepard by Robert M. Dowling, publishing on November 4, 2025.

Apropos, as the following day, November 5th, is Sam Shepard’s birthday as well as the date of La MaMa’s 64th Season Gala!

Sam Shepard, had a long history at La MaMa, going back to early 1965 with “Two One-Act Plays by Sam Shepard.” Soon after, works like Chicago would be taken on tour by the La MaMa Repertory Troupe who performed Shepard’s work in European capitals like Paris and Copenhagen.

“Chicago” directed by Tom O’Horgan and presented during the La MaMa Repertory Troupe Second European Tour in 1966. The photographer is Sweden-based photographer Andre LaFolie, so the production depicted was most likely in Stockholm or Gothenburg.

Many other productions of Shepard’s work followed, including Melodrama Play, The Unseen Hand, The Tooth of Crime, and ShepardSets among others.
