A Conversation with Julian Boal

Moderated by Nisha Sajnani

Presented as part of La MaMa’s Stages of Change Series in partnership with Theatre of the Oppressed NYC and The Distracted Globe Collective

ABOUT

How can theater not only represent the world, but actively transform it? Join us for a conversation with Julian Boal, renowned theater practitioner and scholar, who will share the work of the Escola de Teatro Popular (The People’s Theater School), founded in 2017 and now home to hundreds of participants across centers in Rio de Janeiro and nearby areas. The ETP gathers artists, activists and community members to create performances that stage the freedoms they hope to see realized in the world—building grassroots organizations through collective artistic practice.
This dialogue is part of La MaMa’s Stages of Change Series, which highlights artists and thinkers who use performance as a tool for civic imagination and social transformation. Moderated by Nisha Sajnani, Director of the Drama Therapy Program at NYU and Co-Director of the Jameel Arts & Health Lab at WHO/NYU.

We invite you to join us for this exchange on the radical potential of theater to build communities of resistance, resilience, and possibility.
