We all know the story of Noah and his ark. But
who remembers the story about his neighbor, Pinchas the pickle maker and
the Fish-people? Mermaid Island was very quiet at the time of the great
flood. Two Fish-people were laying their eggs in hopes that their species
could survive the disaster. Fish-people do this by kissing each egg into
being and burying them in the sand to hatch. But as the water level was
rising the couple was forced to cast their eggs out to sea in an old wooden
trunk. Not so far way the other inhabitants of the islands were each contending
with the rising waters. The trunk, carrying its precious cargo, floats in
and out of their hands. We meet Pandora, fantastical bird women; and Jonah
in the whale, among others. After a series of near disasters the trunk appears
before Pinchas who is adrift at sea on a sinking umbrella. He opens the
trunk and to his astonishment finds a mermaid baby has hatched there.

The music consists of rare Klezmer melodies from the late 1800?s and early
1900?s as well as original klezmer inspired compositions by Jacob Lawson
