Belize is a new musical-theater work by Paul Zimet (writer and director), Ellen Maddow (composer) and The Talking Band ( In recent seasons at La MaMa, Maddow and Zimet have created the acclaimed productions of Star Messengers and Painted Snake in a Painted Chair (winner of thirteen 2003 OBIE awards). Belize, set in Central America and London in the 18th century, is a love story shaped by history and politics. Based on the true story of Edward Despard, an Irish-born Colonel in the British Army and Catherine Despard, an African-American woman who became his wife, the historical/hallucinatory mix of characters includes William Blake, Lord Horatio Nelson, and choruses of Black Mummers and the White Boys of Coolrain.
