| "Sounds Like Now", an innovative music
festival featuring some of the most respected experimental musicians/performers
in America today, including Muhal Richard Abrams, Robert Ashley, Thomas
Buckner, Jim Hi Kim, MacArthur "Genius" Prize awardee George Lewis,
Alvin Lucier, Roscoe Mitchell, Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, Carl Stone,
Kato Hideki (Fred Frith, Marc Ribot), Ikue Mori (John Zorn, Arto Lindsay),
Jim O'Rourke (of Sonic Youth and Wilco fame), Zeena Parkins (Bjork, Yoko
Ono), and DJ Tamara. It is hard to imagine today's DJ/dance culture or hip-hop
scenes, noise rockers or much of the sonic textures heard in film/video
games or even TV commercial existing had these experimental musicians not
done the hard work. They have been the first to embrace computers, sampling,
new sonic vocabularies, extended timeframes, and almost everything else
that has contributed to the lurching forward of the dominant contemporary
pop musical culture. Presented with World Music Institute and Thomas Buckner. |
