From June 13th to 30th, La
MaMa will present a video installation, lecture series, and exhibition on its
first two Japanese directors, Shuji Terayama and Yutaka Higashi. The exhibition
and all events will be held in La MaMa La Galleria.
The exhibition will include performance videos of shows by both troupes as well
as lectures by Kyoko Kujo Terayama, the Tenjo Sajiki's producer. There will also
be a display of original poster art from the productions, recreations of props,
personal artifacts such as letters from Terayama to Ellen Stewart, and displays
intended to recapture the spirit of participatory theatre that these directors
created.

Shuji Terayama (1935-1983)
was an avant-garde poet, a writer for radio, television and film, a cultural
critic, a filmmaker, and the founder and director of the Tenjo Sajiki: A Laboratory
of Play. He presented an English version of La Marie Vision at La MaMa in July
1970 with a mixed cast of Japanese and American actors. The Tenjo Sajiki returned
in 1980 to present Directions to Servants, an adaptation of Swift's original
text.

Yutaka Higashi (1945-2000)
was a founding member of the Tenjo Sajiki, then split off in 1968 to form his
own troupe, Tokyo Kid Brothers. He specialized in original musicals and presented
four shows at La MaMa between 1970-81, including Golden Bat, Coney Island Play,
The City, and Shiro.
