45 Years of Innovation

For 45 Years La MaMa has been producing Off-Off Broadway
and providing a home for the creative community of innovators and
culture makers. The New York Times calls La MaMa
the Capital of the Global East Village. Thousands of artists have crossed
these stages and become leaders in culture-making movements throughout the world.

La MaMa is the first home to some of America’s greatest
playwrights, actors and performing artists. 45 Years ago this dream
was born in a basement and has grown into an international
phenomenon led by the unstoppable Ellen Stewart.
On October 18th, we celebrated those 45 years and make a
commitment to the artists who would come after us and need a home
in which to innovate, experiment and develop without compromise.
La MaMa will be here for them.
